NIOVE

NIOVE

FAMILY: Myristicaceae
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Staudtia Stipitata

TREE DESCRIPTION

Niove trees grow to heights of around 25-30 meters, with straight trunks that reach diameters of about 0.6-1.0 meters. The tree has a dense, dark green crown, and its bark is greyish-brown with a smooth texture, often emitting a spicy odor when cut. Native to the tropical rainforests of West and Central Africa.

WOOD DESCRIPTION

  • Color: Heartwood is dark red-brown with purplish tones, while the sapwood is lighter, ranging from pale yellow to light brown, and clearly differentiated.
  • Grain: Generally interlocked, which can lead to a distinctive ribbon pattern on quartersawn surfaces.
  • Texture: Fine and uniform with a natural sheen.

PROPERTY AND APPLICATION

Niove is a very hard and heavy wood with an even structure and good physical properties; it is however, impact-sensitive. The timber’s high resin content contributes to its high level of durability. The drying process must be carefully controlled and slowly performed. If well steamed, Niove is suitable for veneer production. It is a good general construction wood, usable for both interior and exterior purposes. Common applications include the building of stairs, doors and floors.
