MOABI

FAMILY: Sapotaceae
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Baillonella Toxisperma

TREE DESCRIPTION

Moabi trees are large, growing up to 50 meters tall with straight cylindrical trunks, often free of branches for 25 meters and with diameters reaching 1.5 meters. They have a dense crown and grayish-brown bark that exudes a sticky sap when cut. Moabi is native to the tropical rainforests of Central and West Africa.

WOOD DESCRIPTION

  • Grain: Typically interlocked, leading to an attractive ribbon figure when quartersawn.
  • Texture: Fine to medium, with a high natural luster.

PROPERTY AND APPLICATION

  • Properties: Moabi wood is extremely durable and resistant to decay and termites. It has good workability but can be challenging to saw due to its density. It responds well to finishing and polishing, making it highly desirable for fine woodwork.
  • Applications: Ideal for high-quality furniture, flooring, decking, boat building, and heavy construction due to its durability, stability, and rich color.
