TREE DESCRIPTION

Okan trees can reach heights of 40-50 meters, with trunk diameters ranging from 1 to 1.5 meters. The trunk is often straight and cylindrical, with a dense crown and grey-brown, fissured bark. Okan is native to the tropical rainforests of West and Central Africa.

WOOD DESCRIPTION

  • Color: Heartwood is yellow-brown to golden, darkening to a reddish-brown with age. The sapwood is pale yellow and distinct from the heartwood.
  • Grain: Generally interlocked, which can lead to a striking ribbon pattern on flat-sawn surfaces.
  • Texture: Coarse and uniform with a natural luster.

PROPERTY AND APPLICATION

This hard and heavy wood possesses good mechanical properties. Kiln drying must be carried out slowly and carefully or the wood can become spotted. It resists weather and insect attack and is used as and the manufacturing of railway sleepers and heavy floors. In parts of Nigeria Okan is used to make pontoons.
