OKOUME

OKOUME

FAMILY: Burseraceae
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Aucoumea Klaineana

TREE DESCRIPTION

Okoume trees typically grow up to 30-40 meters tall, with straight trunks reaching diameters of 0.8-1.2 meters. They have a smooth, pale bark that peels in patches. The trees are native to Central Africa, primarily found in Gabon and the Congo basin.

WOOD DESCRIPTION

  • Color: The heartwood is pale pink to light brown, darkening slightly with exposure. The sapwood is not well-differentiated from the heartwood.
  • Grain: Straight and even, allowing for a smooth finish.
  • Texture: Medium to fine, with a slight natural luster.

PROPERTY AND APPLICATION

Okoume is a lighter wood, not dissimilar from pine and beech. It has a medium level of firmness, can be dried well, and is resistant to insects but not weather. The wood can be easily processed; however sawing should be done with hard metal alloy blades to compensate for the presence of crystalline deposits. Okoume makes an ideal veneer wood and is also used in the furniture and plywood industries, and for the production of paper pulp and cigar boxes. With appropriate chemical treatments, the timer can also be used as temporary engineering support wood for water-based construction projects.
